Colin MacCormack

Colin MacCormack's research focuses on Greek and Latin poetry, especially epic and didactic poetry from the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods. Within that, he writes primarily about animals in Greco-Roman literature and the diversity of thought concerning non-human subjects across authors such as Aristotle, Herodotus, Nicander, Cicero, Ovid, Lucan and Oppian. Much of his work seeks to push beyond traditional philology by incorporating theoretical approaches from animal studies and posthumanism. Alongside scholarly writing, he has a great interest in the reception of the ancient world in popular media. His work on 18th- and 19th-century Black scholars and educators in the South has been featured in the collaborative museum exhibition Black Classicists in Texas. He also hosts the podcast Movies We Dig, which discusses the ancient world in popular film, television, and video games.
