Fellowship Deadlines
Fellowships, like all formalized award competitions, have strict deadlines. Don’t be fooled into thinking only the external deadline matters. Internal deadlines are the most important ones for you. These are set to allow time for the internal nomination process and for letter writing to take into account what you write in your application. If you want to present the best overall application you can, give yourself and your letter writers the time that is needed to produce strong and thoughtful statements.
Get Started Early
Students and their faculty advisers and mentors are encouraged to be in contact with a Fellowships adviser well ahead of deadlines. The best, most competitive fellowship applications are developed over a period of 2–6 months, involving discussion, multiple drafts, wide consultation and—for the student—plenty of “sleeping on it” time to ensure it feels right, looks right and authentically reflects your achievements, plans and potential.
