Beinecke Scholarship

About

The Beinecke Scholarship provides $35,000 of funding for graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. To be selected, eligible juniors will have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise during their undergraduate careers. Candidates should have research experience or equivalent individual creative work. Applicants must also have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during their undergraduate years. The extent of financial need (with most emphasis on grant aid, not loans) will be a selection criterion. Applying for a Beinecke requires a Smith College nomination. Smith can only put forward one candidate per application year. As a result, there is an internal application that must be completed by mid-November. Students considering applying to Beinecke should fill out an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through Handshake well ahead of the November campus deadline.

Boren Scholarship

About

Boren Scholarships fund the intensive study of language and culture abroad by U.S. undergraduate students who intend to build a career in public service. All eligible applicants have the option to either apply for a Regional Flagship Language Initiative (FLI) or select/design their own study program. Boren Scholarships are open to first years, sophomores, and juniors who are U.S. citizens and whose public service careers would benefit from their improved linguistic and cultural fluency. Awards support programs of 25–52 weeks (preferred) or 12–24 weeks in any field, and STEM majors are able to apply for programs of 8–11 weeks. This scholarship requires coordination between the Fellowships Office and Lewis Global Studies Center, so interested students should complete an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through Handshake to begin planning. Note that Boren Scholarships have a one-year federal service requirement. This means that recipients must commit to 12 months or more working for the government after graduation. Resources are made available to help Boren recipients find eligible work and there is special hiring authority for Boren alumni at several federal agencies.

Churchill Scholarship

Churchill Scholarships are awarded annually to cover one year of master’s study at the University of Cambridge. The scholarship, worth about $65,000, funds U.S. students in STEM fields (eligible programs of study found here) for either a Master of Philosophy, in which students focus wholly on a single research project, or a Master of Advanced Study, in which students pursue a smaller research project in addition to lectures. The award is tenable from nine to 12 months. Applicants must be in their senior year or have graduated within the last 12 months. The Churchill Foundation does not require a minimum GPA, but Churchill scholars typically have GPAs above 3.9. Applying for Churchill requires a Smith College nomination. This is because Smith can only put forward a limited number of candidates per application year. As a result, there is an internal application that must be completed by late-May. Students considering applying to Churchill should fill out an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through Handshake well ahead of the May campus deadline.

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (commonly referred to as CLS) funds an intensive international language and cultural immersion program hosted for eight to 10 weeks over the summer. It is open to students at any level (undergraduate and graduate) who are U.S. citizens or nationals who are committed to gaining fluency in one of the 13 languages designated as critical to U.S. diplomacy and security. Applicants select one language where improved linguistic and cultural competence will play an important role in their future career and must demonstrate the ability to succeed in an academically rigorous experience as well as experience acting as a cultural ambassador.

The DAAD RISE program offers sophomore and junior STEM students the opportunity to intern in Germany with a doctoral student or researcher for 10–12 weeks over summer. Much like NSF REUs, applicants select from a range of specialized STEM projects being offered in many different fields as well as interdisciplinary projects addressing complex environmental and social problems. Applicants can indicate interest in up to three different positions when they apply by submitting tailored motivation letters.

DAAD Study Scholarship

The German Academic Exchange Service Study Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors and recent alums to pursue master’s degrees (up to 24 months) in Germany starting in the following fall. Participants are awarded a monthly stipend of EUR 934. Applicants in all academic fields are welcome to apply. U.S. or Canadian citizens, or permanent residents may apply, as well as foreign nationals who live in the U.S. or in Canada at the time of application deadline if the most recent degree was obtained in the U.S./Canada or if they will receive a degree in the U.S./Canada before scholarship starts. Individuals residing in Germany for over 15 months at the application deadline are ineligible. Interested students and alums should fill out an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through Handshake, then complete an internal application by mid-May the year prior to application.

Foreign Service Officer Graduate Fellowships

The Foreign Service Officer (FSO) Graduate Fellowships are a collection of three separate but similar awards open to seniors and alums with a GPA of 3.2+ and committed to pursuing careers in the Foreign Service. These awards are available to U.S. citizens seeking admission to a full-time two-year master’s degree program in the U.S. that is relevant to the work of the Foreign Service, and fellows receive personalized mentoring and professional development opportunities throughout. The FSO awards prioritize/highly encourage applications from members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need. The Payne Fellowship Program specifically supports applicants who plan to serve with USAID and whose graduate degree will be in international development or a field relevant to the work of the USAID Foreign Service. Payne recipients also participate in two summer internships—one in Washington, DC, and the other at a USAID overseas mission. The Pickering Fellowship Program and the Rangel Fellowship Program support applicants pursuing degrees in any field relevant to Foreign Service work (e.g. public policy, international affairs, public administration, business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages). Recipients of both Pickering and Rangel also participate in two summer internships—one in Washington, DC, with the Department of State (Pickering) or for a member of Congress (Rangel), and the other overseas at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Fulbright U.S. Student Award

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program expands perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue in partnership with 140+ countries worldwide. Fulbright is open to seniors, alums, and graduate students from any academic background who are U.S. citizens. Applicants can select only one country and one of three grant types (to pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad) to apply to per cycle. To receive Smith College endorsement applicants must submit an internal application and have a complete draft of their Fulbright application done by the August campus deadline. To receive priority support with their applications over summer, applicants should complete the internal application by late-May. Interested students should fill out an interest form and make an appointment with a fellowship advisor through Handshake ahead of the May priority deadline.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

The Gates Scholarship at Cambridge University funds up to four years of postgraduate study for intellectually outstanding students with a capacity for leadership and a commitment to improving others’ lives. By design, 30%–40% of scholars are from the U.S. This fellowship is open to any nationality except UK, and funds a wide range of disciplines but not MD degrees. The foundation does not list a minimum GPA, but to be competitive for this award, applicants should have the academic qualifications required to gain admission to Cambridge University’s graduate programs. A GPA of 3.7+ is typically required. Interested seniors and alums should fill out an Handshake, and then complete an internal application by mid-May the year prior to application.

Goldwater Scholarship

The Goldwater Scholarship (internal application due the Thursday before Thanksgiving) is a highly competitive scholarship open to sophomores and juniors that awards $7,500 to those committed to pursuing research careers in STEM. It is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Applicants should have significant research experience and demonstrate strong intellectual engagement in the sciences, mathematics, or engineering. Applying for Goldwater requires a Smith College nomination. This is because Smith can only put forward a limited number of candidates per application year. As a result, there is an internal application that must be completed by mid-November. Students considering applying to Goldwater should fill out an Handshake well ahead of the November campus deadline.

Hertz Fellowship

The Hertz Graduate Fellowship is a merit-based award that funds a cost-of-education allowance (covers fees and tuition at participating schools) and a personal support stipend (currently $34,000/nine months for up to five years and other benefits in a package estimated to be worth $250,000) for students pursuing a Ph.D. in STEM. High academic standing and technical mastery is necessary to be competitive. College seniors, recent graduates, or first-year graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who wish to pursue a PhD in applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and engineering are eligible. Interested students and alums should fill out an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through internal application by mid-May the year prior to application.

Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship

The Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship is offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and is designed to increase training and public engagement around oceanic and atmospheric science, research, education, and technologies. This scholarship is open only to sophomores with a GPA of 3.0+ who are U.S. citizens, and provides two years of academic assistance of up to $9,500 as well as a 10-week summer internship at a NOAA facility between the sophomore and junior year. Applications for the Hollings are open to students across a range of majors so long as their actual field of study/specialization aligns with NOAA's programs and goals.

Knight-Hennessy Scholarship

The Knight-Hennessy Scholarship provides graduate school funding (fully funds three years) in any graduate school discipline at Stanford University, plus participation in a dedicated global leadership program and cross-disciplinary networking. Knight-Hennessy selects 100 scholars per year based on their selection criteria: independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset. Knight-Hennessy is open to seniors and alums within five years of earning their first/bachelor’s degree who are of any nationality. To be competitive, you must meet the eligibility requirements of the Stanford graduate degree program to which you will apply separately. Interested students and alums should fill out an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through Handshake, and then complete an internal application by mid-May the year prior to application.

Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarships fund two years of postgraduate study in the UK, with a possible third year extension. Most UK universities are eligible as potential host institutions for Marshall Scholars. This fellowship is geared toward students who have demonstrated their potential to excel as scholars and contribute as leaders, and who are committed to improving international understanding between the U.S. and the UK. Applications are open to seniors and recent alums (degree earned within the previous two years) in any discipline who are U.S. citizens with a minimum 3.7 GPA. Note that the GPAs of awardees will, on average, be well above 3.7. Applying for Marshall requires a Smith College nomination. This is because Smith can only put forward a limited number of candidates per application year and will generally limit that number to no more than three. As a result, there is an internal application that must be completed by late-May. Students considering applying to Marshall should fill out an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through Handshake well ahead of the May campus deadline.

McCall-MacBain Scholarship

The McCall-MacBain Scholarship fully funds a master’s or professional degree program at McGill University, covering tuition and fees plus a living stipend, and also offers mentorship and leadership skills development opportunities. It is open to seniors and alums and available for both international students and U.S. citizens. The scholarships are granted on the basis of character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity. McCall-MacBain scholarships can be used to fund any of the 150+ eligible master’s programs and three professional programs (law, dentistry, medicine). The program also offers a number of partial awards ($5,000 to $20,000 CAD). Applicants who are current seniors or recent alums (two to three years since graduation) require Smith College nomination. Smith can only put forward a limited number of candidates per application year. As a result, there is an internal application that must be completed by late-May. Students considering applying to McCall-MacBain should fill out an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through Handshake well ahead of the May campus deadline.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program aims to support and recognize outstanding graduate students in social science and STEM fields who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited universities and institutions within the U.S. This grant takes the form of a three-year annual stipend (currently $37,000 per year) with additional tuition and fees assistance and numerous other opportunities for research and professional development, including a prestigious alumni network, and “GRIP” and “GROW” opportunities for working in government labs and international settings. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents holding bachelor’s degrees in relevant fields and planning enrollment or continued study in a relevant graduate school program at a U.S. university. Public Policy & International Affairs Fellowship

The Public Policy & International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship is a rigorous academic preparation program open only to juniors who are committed to careers in public service. The program highlight is the Junior Summer Institute (JSI), which is designed to help prepare students to obtain master’s degrees or joint degrees in international affairs, public policy, public administration, or other related fields, and was developed specifically to address the lack of diversity in a number of public service career fields. The JSIs are offered at six partner sites and are open to international students as well as U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and DACA recipients who are able to contribute to the diversity of perspectives present in the JSI. PPIA also offers GRE prep resources, access to the alumni network and annual Public Service Expo, career guidance and coaching during the JSI, application fee waivers when applying to any of the consortium schools, and a minimum $5,000 scholarship if attending a consortium school.

Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program

The Rangel Summer Enrichment Program is a funded six-week summer program with a $3,300 stipend for students interested in careers in international affairs and foreign policy. This program is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are U.S. citizens and have a GPA of 3.2+. They especially encourage applications from members of groups historically underrepresented in Foreign Service (including women and those with financial need). Recipients build knowledge and skills for international relations work through two courses and a seminar, and gain insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers through guest speakers and site visits for a range of government and non-government organizations.

The Rhodes Scholarship fully funds graduate programs at the University of Oxford—normally for two or three years, with a fourth year possible in some circumstances. Rhodes scholars are young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenges, committed to the service of others, and show promise of becoming value-driven, principled leaders for the world’s future. Approximately 102 Rhodes Scholars are selected each year from around the world with 32 available for U.S. citizens. Smith must endorse or nominate candidates in three Rhodes competitions: U.S., Canada, and Global Scholars. In other competitions a formal institutional letter is not required. Rhodes applications require Smith College nomination because we generally limit the number of candidates per application year to no more than three. As a result, there is an internal application that must be completed by late-May. Students considering applying to Rhodes should fill out an interest form and make a fellowship appointment through Handshake well ahead of the May campus deadline.

Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship Program

The Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship offers seniors and recent graduates a six- to nine-month work experience in Washington, DC, with nonprofit and public interest organizations addressing peace and security issues. Students with demonstrated academic accomplishments, prior experience with public-interest activism or advocacy, and a strong interest in peace and security issues are competitive applicants, and preference is given to students who have not yet had substantial public interest/government experience in the Washington, DC area. The Scoville Fellowship runs two application cycles per year; Fall fellowship applications are due in January for awards beginning July 15–October 1, and spring fellowship applications are due in October for awards beginning January 15–April 1.

Soros Fellowships for New Americans

The Soros Fellowship for New Americans honors the contribution of immigrants and immigrant children to the United States by investing in the graduate education of 30 New Americans who receive financial support over two years of study and access to an extensive alumni network. Each fellow receives up to $90,000 in financial support over one to two years. Selection criteria include demonstrating creativity, originality, and initiative; commitment to and capacity for accomplishment that has required drive and sustained effort; and a commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Truman Scholarship (internal application due the Thursday before Thanksgiving) is a highly competitive scholarship that is open only to juniors who are U.S. citizens. Truman Scholars receive $30,000 of funding for graduate school in fields relevant to careers in public service, broadly defined. The Truman Scholarship targets students committed to becoming change agents and improving institutions that serve the public. Truman Scholars are well-informed and conscientious, demonstrating a record of outstanding academics and community service. Applying for Truman requires Smith College nomination. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship

The Udall Undergraduate Scholarship is open to sophomores and juniors who are committed to conservation and environmental issues, or who are Native American/Alaska Native and dedicated to tribal policy or Native health care. Udall Scholars receive up to $7,000 for academic expenses, participate in a five-day Scholar Orientation Meeting in Tucson, Arizona, and gain access to the Udall alumni professional network. Udall applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents, and must receive Smith College nomination. The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are three- to four-week summer programs hosted by universities in the UK and are open to first years and sophomores who have little to no travel experience outside of North America, a GPA 3.7+, and are U.S. citizens. The themes for these programs range from climate studies to arts and activism, and there are programs available in all four UK countries (Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England) most years. The available summer placements are announced when the application opens in November.

Yenching Academy Scholars Program

The Yenching Academy Scholars Program offers a two-year master’s degree program in a China Studies research area at Peking University. This fully funded program is open to graduating seniors and alums with a strong academic record, clear interest in the interdisciplinary study of China, and a record of extracurricular achievement, community engagement, and leadership. This award is open to students of all nationalities, but has earlier deadlines and additional application material requirements for students from mainland China and the Chinese regions of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
